Did you know that there are over 125 volunteer chaplains in Sacramento county who, among many other both proactive and reactive events, respond to emergencies throughout Sacramento county 24/7?

There are some who continue to respond even without a job. By bidding on these gorgeous holiday trees, you are helping us help the community by providing gas cards to very appreciative chaplains.

Turkey-Free Thanksgiving Recipes

Want to banish the bird? Here are five creative options, and not a turkey among them.
Text and recipes by Melissa Clark

Let's face it: Some of us are far from excited about the prospect of dining on another big bird on Thanksgiving Day. Maybe you never really liked turkey in the first place. Maybe several decades of leftovers have taken their toll. Or maybe you just want a second centerpiece to perk up your holiday table. Whatever the reason, if you're ready to try something new this season, look no further.

Avoid Messy Problems this Holiday Season with Proper FOG Disposal

Avoid Messy Problems this Holiday Season with Proper FOG Disposal

Sacramento, CA -- Sewer blockages and backups increase by up to 50 percent during the holidays due in part to the types of leftover food put down kitchen sinks and garbage disposals. People can avoid potentially messy problems and holiday havoc by properly disposing of fats, oils and grease (FOG).

When poured down the sink, FOG accumulates in sewer pipes restricting flow and ultimately causing blockages and backups in homes and neighborhoods. The Sacramento Area Sewer District and the City of Sacramento Department of Utilities have teamed up to keep drains clog-free during the holiday season.

“Holidays are one of the worst times of year for improper disposal of fats, oils and grease. Although delicious, holiday meals create notoriously bad waste,” said Jan Holm, SASD FOG Program Manager. “Everyone can help prevent these potentially messy problems by talking to guests and kids about the best way to clean up dishes and leftover food after a holiday meal.”

Cool and beautify your home - naturally

Cool and beautify your home - naturally

Not only do trees beautify your home and neighborhood, they can help to dramatically reduce cooling costs during the hot summer months. Sacramento County residents are eligible for up to 10 free trees through the Sacramento Shade tree program, a partnership between Sacramento Tree Foundations and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). Businesses, parks and schools in the SMUD service area are also eligible for free SMUD shade trees.

Sacramento Shade customers can choose from over 30 deciduous trees (deciduous trees shed their leaves in the fall to allow the warm winter sun into your home).

For the love of artichokes

For the love of artichokes

SACRAMENTO, CA. - My mother lives in the Monterey area and just brought me a treat: the official vegetable of Monterey County.

In case you don't know what vegetable that is, it's the artichoke. She didn't just bring me one artichoke but a bundle of them. It lead me to wondering, can we grow artichokes in Sacramento and just how good are these things for you anyway?

According to Dale Huss the vice president of artichoke production at Castroville's Ocean Mist Farms, "Artichokes are fun to grow."
